Metal-enriched, sub-kiloparsec gas clumps in the circumgalactic medium of a faint z = 2.5 galaxy
We report the serendipitous detection of a 0.2 L∗, Lyα emitting galaxy at redshift 2.5 at an impact parameter of 50 kpc from a bright background QSO sightline. A high-resolution spectrum of the QSO reveals a partial Lyman-limit absorption system (NHI = 1016.94±0.10 cm−2) with many associated metal absorption lines at the same redshift as the foreground galaxy. Using photoionization models that ...
متن کاملA Submillimeter Galaxy Illuminating Its Circumgalactic Medium: Lyα Scattering in a Cold, Clumpy Outflow
We report the detection at 850μm of the central source in SSA22-LAB1, the archetypal ‘Lyman-α Blob’ (LAB), a 100 kpc-scale radio-quiet emission-line nebula at z = 3.1. The flux density of the source, S850 = 4.6± 1.1 mJy implies the presence of a galaxy, or group of galaxies, with a total luminosity of LIR ≈ 1012 L⊙. The position of an active source at the center of a ∼50 kpc-radius ring of line...
متن کاملEvidence for a Massive, Extended Circumgalactic Medium around the Andromeda Galaxy
We demonstrate the presence of an extended and massive circumgalactic medium (CGM) around Messier 31 using archival HST Cosmic Origins Spectrograph ultraviolet spectroscopy of 18 QSOs projected within two virial radii of M31 ( = R 300 vir kpc). We detect absorption from Si III at v 300 150 LSR km s toward all three sightlines at R R 0.2 vir, 3 of 4 sightlines at R R 0.8 1.1 vir , and p...
متن کاملHST and Spitzer Observations of the Host Galaxy of GRB 050904 : A Metal - Enriched , Dusty Starburst at z = 6 . 295
We present deep Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the host galaxy of GRB050904 at z = 6.295. The host is detected in the H-band and marginally at 3.6 μm. From these detections, and limits in the z-band and 4.5 μm, we infer an extinction-corrected absolute magnitude, MUV ≈ −20.7 mag, or ∼ L*, a substantial star formation rate of ∼ 15 M⊙ yr , and a stellar mass of...
متن کاملThe Impact of Galactic Feedback on the Circumgalactic Medium
Galactic feedback strongly affects the way galactic environments are enriched. We examine this connection by performing a suite of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, exploring a range of parameters based on the galaxy formation model developed in Vogelsberger et al. (2013) (henceforth V13). We examine the effects of AGN feedback, wind mass loading, wind specific energy, and wind metal-loadi...
